Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has been out less than a week and my unlocks have slowed to a crawl. Some of that can be attributed to Sledgehammer Games’ new Armory Unlock system placing hard limits on how fast players can earn select guns, attachments, and equipment, but the real holdup is an infuriating launch week bug.

The bug, which Sledgehammer Games finally acknowledged as an issue on its Trello board yesterday, causes one or more Daily Challenges to not track for some players. Were this any other year of CoD I might not have even noticed this was happening to me, but in Modern Warfare 3, completing Daily Challenges is a requirement to unlock around half of the new gear on offer.

For instance, to unlock my personal favorite throwable, the Drill Charge, I have to earn three Armory points by completing three daily challenges. You get three dailies per day, and after that Armory points can be earned by winning matches. The problem is, if one of my Daily Challenges is …

When the “metaverse” sales pitch did the rounds in 2022 and 2023, anyone who has been playing MMOs like The Elder Scrolls Online likely had the same thought: “Hold on, I can already do this in a game that lets me have legs.”

It’s not exactly been panning out, either. Meta has lost billions trying to make a virtual world you can live in, buy property in, and customise an avatar in, that sort of thing. You know, everything that the MMORPG has been providing for players for years. 

Even when virtual reality headsets arrived to make all those Ready Player One-style pipedreams come true, games like VR Chat actually delivered on the process of being baptised by a priest while Winnie the Pooh watches. Heck—I’d trust the powerful furries of Second Life to build me a digital home far more than Zuckerberg’s research department.

To help mark a full year since Baldur’s Gate 3’s release, Larian has revealed a new “Channel From Hell” on YouTube. Though the studio has not yet uploaded anything, it wrote on X, “The Everything App” that the “community-focused” channel is set to “feature regular and never-seen-before videos which will arrive this summer.”

It’s hard to believe we’re already at the one-year anniversary of Baldur’s Gate 3’s launch, but it was one year ago today that we all loaded into that character creator, made some kind of really hot orc or elf, and then toggled the armor display to reveal Penis D (or some variation on that theme).

And after all that time, the magic hasn’t really worn off. I’ve got almost 300 hours logged and I’m still pondering my next playthrough. Even as Larian commits to future RPGs outside the Forgotten Realms, the studio is actively interacting with its fanbase and still planning some updates to Baldur’s Gate 3, like the modding and villainy-focused Patch 7.

I’m sure today’s Wordle had a lovely time tripping me up—it must have, it did it so often. Every time I thought I’d cracked it, I ended up with another disappointing grey letter to check off my list. Every correct letter that should surely have been green was a yellow. I have to admit, I did enjoy the little happy gasp I made when I finally sorted everything into the right places though.

Oh, that was embarrassing. Not the number of goes it took me to win—I think a clear in four’s more than respectable—but that I had almost all of the pieces before me really early on. It turns out that I couldn’t see the solution until I’d pretty much gone around the entire keyboard, “skillfully” avoiding the most obvious Wordle answer the whole time.

The release of Call of Duty: Warzone 2 in November was, for the most part, a clean break from the original game. It had largely the same features, a great new map, DMZ mode, and lots of neat quality-of-life updates. The one thing that Warzone 2 did not have, to the dismay of a huge chunk of its community, was a small map. Activision plans to remedy this in Season 2 with the return of Resurgence mode and a new small map to accompany it, but it’s taking some extra time to deliver.

Warzone 2 Season 2 has been delayed two weeks, and is now planned to start on February 15. Activision explained the delay on the official Call of Duty Twitter account, saying that it’s “making several changes based on what we have heard from our player community.”

Valve is currently celebrating Steam’s 20th anniversary in the only way Valve knows how: massive discounts on all of its games, and bad jokes. The studio posted a neat timeline crammed with trivia about the platform, which begins with it getting in a quarrel with itself about what the first third party game released on Steam was (Codename: Gordon, apparently, though as it’s now de-listed Rag Doll Kung Fu also gets a shout-out), and ends with the tiniest tidbit of news about Valve’s biggest release of the year.

It was: Valve announced Counter-Strike 2, a direct sequel to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, which is going to be free-to-play and will carry over all of players’ precious cosmetics.

SAG-AFTRA, the union representing actors, broadcast journalists, hosts, voice actors, and other media professionals in the US, has voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike against videogame companies including Activision, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, and Take-Two Interactive. The vote does not mean that a strike will be called, but the union hopes it will provide “added leverage” in its negotiations for a new Interactive Media Agreement.

The terms of the current Interactive Media Agreement were reached in 2017 following a nearly year-long strike by voice actors. That deal was set to expire in 2020, but was eventually extended until November 2022. 

Negotiations for an updated agreement have been underway since October 2022, but SAG-AFTRA said signatory game companies “have refused to offer acceptable terms on some of the issues most critical to our members, including wages that keep up with inflation, protections around exploitative uses of artificial intelligence,…
